When to scan:
- Aspirate a hip to rule out septic joint or inject steroids with known arthritis

Where to put the probe:
• Follow femur from distal to proximal
• Rotate approximately 45 degrees to axis of femoral neck
• Identify fluid in synovial capsule
• Insert needle in plane from lateral approach
• Normal
